The harms caused by harmonic in petrochemical industry.

The harm of harmonics in petrochemical industry is mainly reflected in the harm to power equipment and interference to measuring and communication equipment. Harmonic can cause additional loss of transformer and cable, increase temperature rise and accelerate insulation aging. The existence of harmonics will increase apparent power and occupy transformer capacity. At the same time, harmonics have a negative effect on capacitors and other devices in power system.

Situation on Site

The main harmonic source in the factory is caused by low voltage VFDs used in diesel hydrogenation unit, power station, wax oil unit, sulfur recovery unit, reforming unit and etc. 

The harmonics are concentrated in 6nth +/- 1 time, mainly in 5th, 7th, 11th and 13th times. These harmonics seriously affect the safety of power equipment, causing serious distortion of grid voltage, overheating of cables and transformers, accelerated aging of insulation, communication interference, interruption of power supply due to meter misoperation, which affects the safety and stability of the whole distribution system.

Meanwhile, the reactive power reduce the power factor of the whole system.

Results

After Nancal Electric active harmonic filters were put into use, the harmonic distortion rate of diesel hydrogenation, sulfur recovery unit was reduced from 31% to 3.3%.

Harmonic distortion rate of reforming unit in the power station was reduced to 3% from 28%. 

The harmonic distortion rate of wax device was reduced from 34% to 3.6%. 

The power factor of the modified cabinet reached above 0.98, which fully meet the relevant requirements of harmonic distortion and power factor.
